Our world is currently being held captive by a fossil gerontocracy. In this presentation I discuss how historically we came to be in this predicament through the overlapping energy regimes of plantation extractivism, coal-powered industry and consumerism, and oil-powered mobility and plasticity. I also discuss what we can do now to extricate ourselves from these legacies and a mid 20th century model of modernity premised upon infinite growth in resource use and waste.
